My Approach to Therapy

I take a ‘client-centered’ approach to therapy and believe therapy is a partnership between the client and the therapist. I take the time to build a trusting, mutually-respectful client/therapist relationship, which includes a non-judgmental stance and I refrain from giving advice whenever possible. But, rather I provide guidance and support for clients to reach their full potential and make their own choices based on what is best for them.

I strive to use humor in therapy whenever possible and I also incorporate spiritual themes, tailored to the client’s personal belief system. I firmly believe that once a person becomes aware of their existing coping mechanisms and responses to stress that are negatively impacting quality of life, they are better able to find healthier, more balanced responses, and this paves the way for authentic change.

I incorporate many concepts of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses primarily on how thoughts influence feelings, which in turn, affects behaviors and responses. I consistently utilize a strengths-based approach, which emphasizes the client’s resiliency and ability to cope, using protective factors and personal strengths to overcome obstacles in their life.

In addition, I work with clients on learning to incorporate mindfulness strategies, coping skills, and use concepts of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to improve communication, emotional regulation, self-awareness, and decision-making skills.
